Abstract
The importance of manual labour and the superiority of humans over other creatures because they have hands has been emphasised many times in philosophy, anthropology, and sociology. Hegel, for example, said that “The hand is the animated creator of human happiness”. Heidegger argued that “Only a speaking, i.e. thinking, being can have hands and thus, through manipulation, perform the work of the hand”.
This short essay does not seek to demonstrate the superiority of humans over other living beings: rather, the intention is to analyse the possible nuances of a simple yet powerful gesture such as “holding hands”.
